This chapter describes the evolution of the Sustainable Health Action Research Programme (SHARP) initiative for tackling health inequalities in Wales. It highlights the ways in which this differs from previous policy initiatives and explores the origins and rationale for SHARP as a contribution to policy implementation and development. The chapter discusses the seven projects that emerged from the selection process to be funded under SHARP.
