Parenthood change and policy reform in Scandinavia, 1970s-2000s
This chapter examines the main trends in the social and political redesign of motherhood and fatherhood in Scandinavia from the early 1970s until the early 2000s. It focuses on the far-reaching policy reforms of setting parents free for paid work, along with the provision of extra-family childcare services and the liberation of parents from paid work to be carers for their children. It then examines the interplay of parenthood change and policy reform, before looking at the dominant shift in ‘parenthood thinking’. This is defined as the translation of parental responsibility for children's care into the social rights of mothers and fathers.
