This chapter describes ‘activation’ as it is applied to social assistance recipients in Denmark. It shows that compulsory activation, when applied to the vast majority of social assistance and social insurance recipients after a set period, is contextualised within the ‘Active Line’ of Denmark. This is an expression of the principle that all of those who are in receipt of public income transfers should contribute to society through some activity. The chapter also places some attention to several other features that are important for comparison.

Keywords:   activation, compulsory activation, social insurance, social assistance, recipients, Active Line, public income transfers
