This chapter explores social capital in the lives of young carers. Barry reports the views and experiences of 20 young carers (10 young men and 10 young women aged 12–23) who were involved in young carers projects across the Central Belt of Scotland. Barry examines the concept of social capital as it applies to young carers, notably in respect of their interactions with family, peers, teachers and other adults in their lives. Her findings highlight the importance of young carers projects including access to social capital, which enabled these young people to obtain support and acknowledgement, but which also allowed them to temporarily detach themselves from their significant caring responsibilities.
