The specific benefits of involving children and young people in research include empowering diverse groups of children and young people as active participants in the research process; recognising that children and young people are experts on their own lives; enabling a better understanding of their world; valuing their perspectives and promoting their voice; creating a body of knowledge by children and young people about childhood, youth and their lived experiences; and building links between researchers, schools and young people's organisations. This chapter outlines the work of the Young People's Public Health Reference Group, which was established by the National Children's Bureau in the UK. The project includes two young people's reference groups in London and Leeds, a website through which group members can disseminate information about public health research to other young people, a conference, training, and other young-person-led activities and outputs. The chapter goes on to explore the successes and challenges of the project, and the lessons for involvement of children and young people using an advisory group model.
