Globalised transmissions of housing wealth and return migration
Globalised transmissions of housing wealth and return migration
This chapter provides a case study on migration, transnational kinship networks, and intergenerational wealth transmission among Caribbean elders in the UK. It provides life history accounts of Caribbean elders engaging in complex financial exchanges with kinship networks in countries of both origin and residence. It observes that these exchanges are often used to help younger family members onto the housing ladder at the start of their housing careers. However, it explores some of the issues and tensions inherent in inheritance planning made more problematic not only by the fact that properties are located across a wide geographic span, but also by the cultural desire to balance the need to preserve the ‘family home’.
