  • Natália Alves is Professor of Adult Education and Sociology of Education at the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. Her main research interests include adult education policy in general and vocational education and training policies and practices in particular, and their implications for educational and professional trajectories, mainly in issues of access and success in education and work.

  • Sebastiano Benasso holds a PhD in Sociology and is a Research Fellow at the Department of Educational Sciences (Di.S.For.), University of Genoa, and works on many social research projects using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The main topics of his research are the biographical transitions of young adults, the life course de-standardisation, and youth cultures and lifestyles. He is a member of the Observatory of Social Inequalities hosted at Di.S.For and a member of the editorial team of About Gender, International Journal of Gender Studies.

  • Dejana Bouillet holds a PhD in Social Pedagogy and is a Professor at the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, Croatia. She teaches inclusive and social pedagogy and researches a wide range of etiological, phenomenological and intervention aspects of socialisation problems of children and youth. During her career she has worked in various public and scientific institutions such as the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation, State Institute for the Protection of Family, Maternity and Youth and in the Institute for the Social Research in Zagreb.

  • Queralt Capsada-Munsech is a YOUNG_ADULLLT Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Education, University of Glasgow. She received her PhD in Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona. Her doctoral thesis focuses on the incidence and persistence of graduates’ over-education across fields of study and social origin. Her main research interests are on the areas of social stratification and inequalities, transitions from education to work and educational and skills (mis)matches.

  • Ruggero Cefalo is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Vienna, Department of Sociology, where he teaches political sociology (p.viii) and comparative welfare analysis, and social policy in comparative perspective. He is particularly interested in educational and labour policies, school-to-work transitions and youth studies. Among his recent publications is Young People’s Disadvantages on the Labour Market in Italy: Reframing the NEET Category (with V. Sergi and Y. Kazepov, 2018).

  • Anna Cossetta is Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the University of Genoa. Her research topics are related to the social economy, international cooperation, volunteering, social innovation, Web dynamics and methodology, with particular interest in online research.

  • Vlatka Domović is a Professor at the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb. Her research interests include teacher education and training, educational administration, comparative education and school effectiveness. Besides her academic career she is committed to the transfer of her scholarship into educational policy projects and she has been involved in development of programmes for in-service teacher training, especially in the fields of curriculum development and school improvement.

  • Kristinn Hermannsson is Lecturer in Educational Economics at the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change in the School of Education, University of Glasgow. A graduate of the Universities of Strathclyde (PhD, MSc with distinction), Maastricht (MSc) and Reykjavik (BSc), his research interest is in the analysis and modelling of socioeconomic impacts of education and skills at national, regional and local levels. He has published widely on a broad range of economic impacts of education.

  • Judith Jacovkis is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and at the University of Glasgow. She belongs to the Globalisation, Education and Social Policies research group where she works in the field of cash transfer social policies, inequalities and educational policies especially addressed to vulnerable groups. She is currently involved in different research projects addressing the politics, the governance and the experience of educational trajectories and transitions.

  • Tero Järvinen is Associate Professor at the Department of Education, University of Turku, Finland. His main research interests are related (p.ix) to comparative studies on educational and school-to-work transitions of young people.

  • Yuri Kazepov is Professor of International Urban Sociology at the University of Vienna where he also teaches comparative social policy. His main research interests include comparative multi-level governance arrangements, scale relations, urban poverty, social innovation and inequalities. In particular, he is interested in the opportunity structures that emerge in different contexts and the way in which institutional configurations mediate between macro processes and micro strategies.

  • Siyka Kovacheva is Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Policy at Plovdiv University, Bulgaria. Her research interests are in the field of youth transitions to employment and parenthood and civic participation. She has experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative research in cross-national perspectives.

  • Kevin Lowden is Senior Researcher at the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change within the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. He has over 30 years of experience as a researcher on national and international education research and evaluation projects with an impact on policy and practice.

  • Valentina Milenkova is Professor of Sociology of Education, Head of the Department of Sociology at South-West University, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. She works on the broad area of social dimensions of education and training policies as a researcher and expert. Milenkova is member of NESET II. She has published ten monographs and over 80 articles in Bulgarian and international journals. Her research interests are particularly focused on educational inequalities, policies for ethnic minorities and the social significance of education.

  • Tiago Neves is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at the University of Porto, Portugal. His research focuses on social and educational inequalities, in particular on compensatory education and access to higher education. He uses both qualitative and quantitative methods.

  • Mauro Palumbo is Professor of Sociology and Evaluation Theory at the University of Genoa, Department of Educational Sciences. He is President of RUIAP (Italian Universities Network for Lifelong Learning) and coordinator of the PhD Course in Social Sciences of (p.x) the University of Genoa. His topics are centred on social economical and territorial analysis, youth condition, school-to-work transition, labour market and local entrepreneurship, tourism, local and regional development policies, social inequalities, methodology of social research and evaluation.

  • Valeria Pandolfini holds a PhD in Research Methodology in Human Sciences and is Research Fellow in Sociology at Di.S.For. Her main research interests include educational processes, training systems and lifelong learning, in particular issues of social inequalities in education and evaluation of educational policies, with special regard to methodological aspects linked to combined use of qualitative and quantitative techniques and to the application of new technologies in social research.

  • Marcelo Parreira do Amaral is Professor of International and Comparative Education at the University of Münster, Germany. Parreira do Amaral is also member of NESET II (Network of Experts on the Social Aspects of Education) funded by the European Commission. His main research interests include international comparative education, education policy, international educational governance and its implications for educational trajectories, in particular issues of access to and equity in education.

  • Borislava Petkova, PhD, is Assistant Professor at the University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Her interests are in the fields of cultural anthropology, traditional culture and ethnicity, and identity of contemporary youth. She is involved in several European and national research projects.

  • Mirjam Pot is a researcher and PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. Mirjam holds a BA and MA degree in Political Science and a MSc in Urban Geography. She has been engaged in the YOUNG_ ADULLLT project for two years and is currently pursuing her PhD project in the field of comparative health policy. In her current work, she researches contemporary notions and practices of solidarity in medicine and health care from an interpretive perspective.

  • Xavier Rambla is Associate Professor of Sociology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Over the last few years he has participated in research on LLL policies in the European Union, the Civil Society Education Fund and Education for All in Latin America. Rambla is co-convenor of the education policy network of the European (p.xi) Educational Research Association. He has been a short-term invited lecturer in the areas of social science and education at different universities in Europe and Latin America.

  • Ana Bela Ribeiro holds a PhD in Education Sciences and is currently Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education in the University of Porto, Portugal. She has worked in areas such as civic and political participation, media education, community intervention, citizenship education, non-governmental organisations, youth studies, lifelong learning and education policies. She also has experience in qualitative, quantitative and collaborative research methodologies.

  • Risto Rinne is Professor of Education and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Education and the Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning and Education at the University of Turku, Finland. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and has published over 500 academic works. His main interests include sociology of education, international comparative education, educational policy and history of education

  • Rosario Scandurra, PhD, is Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His main research interests include adult skills, educational and social inequality, and quantitative methods. He has participated in different international and national projects and his research has appeared in various international peer-reviewed journals.

  • Nikolas Schöneck studied political science, economics and sociology in Dresden and Münster. He is currently pursuing an MA in Public Policy at the NRW School of Governance. Schöneck gained practical experience with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, working on education and science policy in Bonn, Copenhagen, Paris and Dakar. His research interests include educational governance, equity in education and the education–employment nexus.

  • Heikki Silvennoinen is Professor in Sociology of Education at the Department of Education, University of Turku, Finland. His main research interests are sociology of education, stratification in education and society, marginalisation in education and labour market, evaluation of education, education policy, adult education and lifelong learning. (p.xii) Anna Siri holds a PhD in Evaluation of Educational Processes and Systems. Currently Adjunct Professor at the University of Genoa, she is a founder and researcher of the interdisciplinary United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Chair ‘Health Anthropology, Biosphere and Healing Systems’, University of Genoa. Her main field of work is international comparative studies in education (focusing on school dropout rates, social and educational inequalities). She has published many articles and reports in various international peer-reviewed journals and she has actively participated in paper presentations and symposiums at major research association meetings.

  • Sonia Startari holds a PhD in Sociology and was a Research Fellow at the University of Genoa from 2012 to 2018. She has experience in social and educational research, evaluation research and lifelong learning programmes. She works on pilot projects on methods of assessment and certification of competences as well as on various projects for adult education and corporate training, and on evaluation projects of personal services and professional skills.

  • Jenni Tikkanen is Project Researcher at the Department of Education at the University of Turku, Finland. In her doctoral dissertation she focused on educational equality and segregation of basic education in Finland and beyond by utilising a life course perspective. Her main research interests are related to sociology of education, urban youth studies and international comparative education.

  • Oscar Valiente, PhD, is Senior Lecturer at the School of Education of the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on the role of international organisations in the global governance of education and training systems, the political economy of education and training, technical and vocational education and training, and skills in international development and the effects of education policies on social equity from a comparative perspective. He has carried out research in several locations around the world, including Europe, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.

  • Thomas Verlage is Research Associate at the Research Centre ‘Education and Coping in the Life Course’ at the Goethe University Frankfurt. His main research interests include the transitions from school to work, new labour market policy and youth employment assistance.
