Introduction: Spaces and practices of care for older people in Sub-Saharan Africa
This introduction aims to set up and initiate a conversation among social researchers about informal–formal/private–public spaces and practices of care for sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) vulnerable older populations. Against the background of changing demographic and cultural trends in SSA generally, this chapter emphasises heterogeneity in ageing experiences, policies and practices in terms of their embeddedness in different geographies, spaces and multi-disciplinary configurations. Heterogeneity in terms of enabling/disabling environments, liveability, gender, welfare regimes, stage of the demographic transition (timing) within and across localities are increasingly being recognised by policymakers, planners, service providers and older people themselves.
Keywords: ageing, older people, sub-Saharan African, practises of care, heterogeneity
