“Putting yourself about”: PCCs, the media and the public
PCCs need to sustain a high public profile in order to demonstrate that they are holding the police to account, responding to what the public wants and delivering on promises made in the PCCs Policing Plans. The relationship between the commissioners and an often hostile media is explored and commissioners’ tactics for dealing with the media and developing a mutually satisfactory way of working are assessed, together with a glance at the way the police respond to the media. The chapter places these relationships in the context of the academic literature and debate.
