Placements in statutory agencies supervised by registered professional social workers are increasingly regarded as providing the only appropriate conditions for final year social work students. Written from the perspectives of a student, supervisor and practice educators, the chapter is grounded in the reality in many areas of the UK - that of a paucity of statutory placements and an attendant belief that alternatives are ‘second best’. This chapter challenges the ‘common sense’ of this evaluation and illustrates the conditions in which third sector placements can provide equally robust learning for students at all stages of their education. Drawing on pedagogic theory and research, the critical evaluation of one such placement provides a framework for practice educators which is widely relevant beyond the discipline of social work.
