Vulnerable young people’s lives
Vulnerable young people’s lives
This chapter considers lived experiences of vulnerability through focussing on the life stories and perspectives of vulnerable young people. Experiences of abuse, neglect, drug use, homelessness, trouble at school, exploitation, bullying and a range of other ‘vulnerabilities’ are outlined. Vulnerable young people’s aspirations for the future are also illuminated. The chapter underlines that vulnerable people might not necessarily always conform to norms of ‘acceptable’ or ‘passive’ behaviour which the concept of vulnerability seems to confer on them. It highlights a close relationship between vulnerability and deviance.
