Social policies and social control

This chapter acts as the outline for the purpose of the book and an overall review of each chapter. We look at social policy trends in a changing political environment in the UK, noting continuities between political parties over several decades. We outline how this edited collection is concerned with the ways in which the state uses powers against people, the reduction of individual liberties, and a decline in the recognition of the importance of social security for social cohesion and family life. The introduction sets out how we cover topics such as work and welfare; issues in the asylum system; the governance of communities; education of young people; user involvement in health and social care; and 'nudge' strategies in the NHS.
