This chapter introduces the book and the idea of ‘mobilising’ research knowledge in education. It outlines the focus of the chapters and the commonality between them. It then looks at the organisation of higher education sector in a range of countries, highlighting their differences and similarities. It then considers the relationship between universities and governments which is vital in shaping the research environment and research agendas. Finally it highlights the system of education research in the different countries, including the funding arrangements.
