Diversity in family life

This chapter discusses the phenomenon of “living apart together” (LAT). A LAT relationship is a couple of the same or different gender, that do not live together in the same residence. Partners living in LAT relationships reside in separate households. This is a growing category of adults, a manifestation not only of the individualisation and informalisation of relationships, but reflects the increasing number of couples who attempt to balance independence, intimacy, and family obligations.

Keywords:   Living apart together, LAT couples, informalisation of relationships, independence, family life, family diversity
