Practical or ‘doing’ strategies are used by older people to manage the ageing experience. In their effort to maintain social roles and activities (‘keeping active’), older people remain proactive, accepting responsibility and taking action to manage everyday living and address difficulties. Standards and routines are maintained (‘keeping stable’) through efforts to keep some stability in life, often in the face of threats brought about by illness, disability and other forms of loss. Further, relationship boundaries are preserved (‘keeping balance’) through efforts to maintain an acceptable balance between giving and receiving within relationships.
