This chapter highlights the fact that New Labour has taken a number of opportunities to address women's issues, and that, as a consequence, the policy framework in the UK has been significantly altered. For the first time, gender as well as class features firmly on New Labour's political agenda. It specifically determines the problematic issue of women versus gender, the party's failure to recognise the differential impact of policies on groups of women and the broader institutional and public-policy constraints that present themselves. Working women appear to be some of the biggest winners under New Labour's policies. There has been no sustained policy commitment to gender mainstreaming or tackling women's issues per se. The case studies show that there are significant difficulties to achieving legislative and policy change. A key lesson from this book is that a project to feminise politics has to acknowledge the need to engender policy.
