This chapter discusses the concepts of neighbourhood and community. It discusses the design of spaces around houses and the social interactions that take place there. The discourse of community is examined as well as the impact of design and social relations in these communities. The key theme of the chapter is the existence of different kinds of neighbourhood that are linked to lifestyle choice. Considered as well in this chapter are the applicability of the term ‘community’ to different kinds of neighbourhoods and efforts to create ‘communities’.
