This chapter examines the themes that underpin the major explanatory theories of vertical occupational sex segregation (VOSS), and scrutinises them through the lens of qualitative analysis. It also investigates whether the interpretations and attitudes of people tally with suppositions intrinsic to patriarchy theories, binary-based theories, and human-capital-based theories. The three general areas of discussion include the respondents' perceptions of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as an employer, the causes of VOSS, and the possible solutions to VOSS. It is seen that it is a mistake to assume men and women necessarily conform to ‘naturally’ determined stereotypical masculine and feminine roles. Many respondents felt that to take child-related leave might have adverse effects on human-capital levels, although this was particularly expressed as a problem in the highly technical areas of the BBC. The majority of respondents held the view that traditional sex roles were on the decrease.
