This chapter presents commentaries from an academic perspective on the cases of direct social work with the various children presented in the previous chapters. It proposes that the cases all show how important it is to make an assessment of the child's problems and circumstances, before deciding to work directly with the child. They also show that a practitioner's relationship with the child or young person is essentially a personalised relationship. This illustrates that assessment prior to the social work process in indentifying the range of needs which should be addressed by different kinds of therapeutic intervention is crucial.
