Working for a living
Working for a living
Moving from childhood into adulthood, this chapter explores change in employment policies and the impact this has had on young people's life opportunities and career expectations, including entry into the adult labour market, treatment and support at work, and changes in the labour market. It turns to work and employment as a key factor in transitions to adulthood, and as a key preoccupation of disability policies since the 1940s. The first section looks at the kinds of help people drew upon to look for work in changing labour markets. The second section considers barriers to employment and the impact of changing policies. The final section addresses the substitution of meaningful employment with alternative occupation.
