This chapter attempts to set the health policy case study within a general academic context, tracing methodological discussions and debates in relevant disciplinary fields. In particular, the use of case studies within the political sciences, as well as sub-disciplinary factions, has little bearing. The methodological value of the case study to policy analysis and public administration is that it embraces multiple research designs and sources, particularly those which are, though not exclusively, qualitative in nature. As such, the case method generates detailed, narrative-like description, which can be of interest in its own right. In intellectual terms, this methodological flexibility allows researchers to generate theoretical insights.
