This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the growing tensions in the relationship between policy and evidence, at a time when policy and practice are trying to be more ‘evidence-based’. It considers how evidence influences policy (if at all). It then sets out the aims and approaches of this volume. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
