This chapter discusses the experiences of older people in the context of recent hypothesising about the nature of family life. It focuses on various approaches to intergenerational relationships and the lifecourse. It explores how family relationships are actively constructed and patterned in later life. It also examines how the concept of ‘family practices’ can be employed to improve understanding of the family ties that older people negotiate.
