This chapter discusses how the work of advocates and the agencies employing them should be evaluated. It identifies three standpoints from which advocacy should be made accountable: (i) bottom-up accountability: to clients, their families, and the public at large; (ii) top-down accountability: to officials of the commissioning agencies, the government, and ultimately to all of us as voters and taxpayers; and (iii) accountability to the governors, manager, and staff of the agency itself. The issue of accreditation is also considered.
