This chapter deals with questions that pose dilemmas for advocates – the kinds of dilemmas which it may be helpful to talk over with colleagues. The cases discussed are not a typical cross-section of advocacy work. They are meant to be rather difficult, which also means they do not show the welfare state at its best. These cases include clients with fantasies and ‘mad’ ideas; those who seem able to advocate for themselves; ‘unlovable’ people; ‘heart-sink’ clients, such as people who complain about every service they deal with, and will probably end up complaining about their advocates too; and cases that cannot be closed.
