Automated data collection systems, most notably transaction-based fare collection and automatic vehicle tracking have great potential to improve both the planning and operations of urban public transport systems as well as the customer experience for those relying on it. Bus Rapid Transit being a hybrid of urban bus and rail service poses special challenges in terms of how to make best use of these data collection systems, but methods successfully developed and deployed for other large urban public transport systems can be adapted to the needs of BRT operators and urban transport authorities. Specific applications with potential include estimating customer origin-destination matrices for the integrated public transport system (including BRT and other services), performance measurement and monitoring, and customer classification.
