The history of the series and the background and previous attempts to monitor child well-being are described. Then there is an introduction to the concept of child well-being and a review of the four key theoretical perspectives: children’s rights, the new sociology of childhood, the ecological perspective and the new science of happiness. There is a review of the comparative indices of child well-being and an assessment of the spending on children between countries and in the UK over time. The structure of the book is described.
