Abstract

The trajectories of welfare states are being decided in hostile economic and political environments. Most are subject to austerity in one form or another, although the precise impact is uneven and variable. Even where countries have so far resisted austerity, many of them are planning to impose deep expenditure cuts in the future. What is also apparent however, is that austerity is about far more than spending cuts.
