This chapter explores the key features of sociology as a discipline, and provides the author’s personal reflections on becoming a sociologist, particularly in the specialist field of the sociology of sport. Sociology is presented here as a discipline that, at its best, is diverse in theory and method, open to engagement with other disciplines, and shaped by imaginative and creative work. The paper explores the author’s entry into sociology as a student; subsequent career at the universities of Aberdeen, Durham and Loughborough; and, different research interests in relation to football, sport, globalization, and migration. Collaborative work with a variety of colleagues is highlighted.

Keywords:   sociological imagination, sport, football, globalization, glocalization
