In this chapter the discussion begins by exploring how youth sociology has historically theorised youth and the ‘youth question’. It introduces an abridged history of the key arguments and ideas that have structured the disciplinary focus. The discussion proposes that, more recently, youth sociology has under-theorised the concept of ‘structure’. As a result, it is suggested that we need to have an approach that recognises how the interplay between the economy, culture and the state (through social and economic policies) operates to structure the ecological environment that young people have to manage as a part of their everyday lives and trajectories towards adulthood. This then provides the theoretical framework for the discussion that follows.
