In chapter three, a discussion of the macro contexts framing retired women’s migratory decisions in terms of ‘upper structural layers’ and ‘more proximate structural layers’ is presented. The focus then shifts to the ‘meso context’ or women’s positionalities the chapter considers how positionalities act as a meso level of interaction between such structures and women’s agency. This chapter explains my use of translocational positionality and discuss this in terms of gender, class, age and ethnicity in theoretical and lived contexts. Women’s social locations are differently influenced by context and are fashioned and reinforced by one another. This chapter explores the difficulties in disentangling women’s positionalities and suggested that understanding the complex relationship between them is key to illuminating their lives in context.
