This chapter will discuss interprofessional ethics from the perspective of staff working within an Intellectual Disabilities (Learning Disabilities) team. The authors will discuss the theoretical ethical frameworks and professional guidelines that inform practice. Interdisciplinary and interagency working is well established in intellectual disabilities, though different professional backgrounds and cultures can lead to disagreement between practitioners, and debates over the ethically correct approach to contentious situations. Examples from practice will be used to illustrate these concepts. Recent legislative change and the resulting over-arching obligation of intellectual disability workers to consider the impact of incapacity and vulnerability will also be described. Effective interprofessional and interagency working are integral to intellectual disabilities practice, and must be utilised to promote optimal care. The authors will comment reflectively on current practice and suggest strategies for developing shared understanding in order to enhance the patient experience.
