This essay describes the growing significance of the private rental sector in the US - a trend mirrored in Britain. However, affordability is also becoming an issue in the rented sector. In the past, governments on both sides of the Atlantic have capitalised on market-rate developments to boost the supply of affordable housing. The chapter explores alternative mechanisms used by the Federal and local governments in America to draw private investment into the private rented sector.
