There has been considerable research concerning the social determinants of health, which shows how healthy outcomes are related to social class. This chapter discusses how urban planning can shape the built environment to ensure better health outcomes across the social spectrum. It builds on the insights of the extensive Healthy Cities Movement. Aspects that are covered include: healthy diets and food provision; provision for exercise and action on obesity; air quality; and green spaces and mental health.
