Professor Jens Qvortrup is internationally recognised as one of the pioneers of the new sociological paradigm for the study of children and childhood which emerged in the early 1990s. In this interview he offers a personal account of his career and unusual route into childhood studies. He explains the reasons for his focus on childhood as a permanent social category and why he believes that intergenerational studies must be an integral part of the future of the field. He identifies fragmentation as the main danger facing childhood studies, particularly if there continues to be an emphasis on small-scale studies and the plurality of childhoods.
