What are the quality of life consequences of living in ethnically divided neighbourhoods? Urban scholars theorise that there is ‘good’ segregation and ‘bad’ segregation (Peach, 1996), which helps certain groups while victimizing others (Kaplan and Woodhouse, 2004). This chapter investigates the characteristics of the most ethnically-concentrated African American-, Latino-, and White-neighbourhoods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Socioeconomic variables (e.g. income levels, public school reading scores, ethnic businesses, etc.) are statistically analysed and compared to the ethnic residential patterns. This chapter identifies several positives and negatives of living in ethnically divided neighbourhoods. The findings illustrate the connection between social inequality and spatial inequality in an American urban landscape.
